Teledyne Coax Switches – Making the Difference
Until about 5 years ago, Teledyne Coax Switches were mostly known to high reliability markets such as Space and Military. Moving Teledyne's design and
production resources to the Relays facility in the Los Angeles area, brought new beneficial capabilities to this important product line:
- dedicated RF engineering and production teams, experienced in bringing relays with the highest reliability and repeatability to their customers,
- 40 years of knowledge and continuous improvementsin contact plating,
- extended clean room facilities,
- quality labs, learning extensively from in house performance and life time statistics, and
- state of the art CNC equipment for cavity modelling at superior thoroughness
Production teams share responsibility for high standard of workmanship and quality in dedicated manufacturing cells, where job flow, work in process, inspection and test activities can be closely monitored and very effectively accomplished. This combination of technology expertise, engineering skills and highly motivated manufacturing teams have given Teledyne's Coax Switches product line unique capabilities, needed in highly demanding test and measurement applications. In extensive test series Teledyne Coax Switches have been benchmarked against leading edge competitive products, having strength in either one of these characteristics:
- Repeatability
- Intermodulation Performance and
- Lowest Triboelectric Impact.

|
Repeatability:
Teledyne conducted mechanical life tests of their SPDT coaxial switches to 10M cycles and measured RF characteristics initially and at 1M cycle interval. Switches have been cycled at 3Hz cycling rate with no contact load.

The plot of RF Insertion Loss (IL) values and their repeatability up to 6GHz demonstrate that the RF IL repeatability is well within 0.05dB up to 6GHz.

Teledyne Coax Switches - Making the Difference
We have also recorded RF IL repeatability on SPDT up to 20GHz, for 50K continuous cycles (every cycle was recorded and compared). See below.

2. Passive Intermodulation (PIM)
In test and measurement scenarios for new generation base station components it becomes an important issue to minimize passive intermodulation influence of connectors and switching devices. Samples of Teledyne Coax switches, Single PoleDouble Throw (SPDT), Single Pole Multi Throw (SPMT) and Transfer switches have been made subject to test for intermodulation behaviour in PIM orders 3 and 5.

With a Summitek SI-800A Intermodulation Teststation, two carriers of 25 Watts RF at frequencies of 869 and 890MHz have been applied to Teledyne Coax Switches, results are shown in the intermodulation table which follows:
|
|
Teledyne’s Coax Switches have low intermodulation. characteristics due to design, materials, heritage,
process management and manufacturing technology.
3. Triboelectric Effect
Physics describe tribo electricity as a charge created by friction of different materials and contact or separation of materials. Not only insulators, also. conductive materials acting with each other are affected.
Coax Switches used in very sensitive measurement scenarios, where signal integrity, accuracy or the capability to record "Nano Events" can influence, can create undesired low level transients by triboelectric discharge.

We apply a patented design to our coax switches to create a new family of switches with this new featured function. For more information about our coax switches and switch matrices visit our website www.teledyne-europe.com.

Known for manufacturing ultraminiature electromecha-nicalrelays we have also developed three specific versions of our standard TO-5 package:
The 400H series is another High Performance DPDT con-tacts family of TO-5
sealed relays but dedicate to the High Temperature (H) applications. The 412H, 422H (magnetic-latching) and 432H
(sensitive coil) are specially designed for reliable operation in elevated ambient temperatures up to 200°C. Special material selection and proprietary plating process provide a robust contact system that can withstand high temperature condition yet it can still reliably transmit low level signal.
Typical applications are:
- Oil exploration (down hole) instrumentation,
- High temperature industrial and process control instrumentation.
The 400K series is a High Shock and High Perfor-mance TO-5 sealed Relay having DPDT contacts. The 412K (non-latching version) and 422K (magnetic-latching version) are designed expressly to withstand shock levels up to 4000g's, 0.5mS
duration in the axial plane (x-axis). Special material selection and construction details provide assurance that critical elements of the relay structure and mechanism will not be permanently displaced or damaged as a result of extremely high
"g" shock levels.
The 400V series is a family of DPDT High Vibration (V) and High Performance TO-5 sealed Relays. The 412V and the 432V (sensitive coil) are designed specifically to withstand vibration levels of 380g’s at 200Hz in the axis parallel to contact motion (x-axis), or 100g’s 10-2000Hz for 20 minutes in the x-axis. A unique magnetic circuit prevents contact opening (chatter) in excess of 10µS or 1µS transfer under vibration or shock conditions.
Typical applications for the K- and V-Versions are:
- Avionics aircraft control
- Aircraft control systems
- Transportation systems (rail/truck)
And also by virtue of their inherently low intercontact capacitance and contact circuit losses, the H, K and V series relays have proven to be excellent subminiature RF switches for applications with frequency ranges well into the UHF spectrum.

We are taking the opportunity to use this edition of our newsletter to introduce the latest addition to our growing range of miniatur high performance RF Relays, the Surface Mount version of the TO5 packaged, SPDT RF311.
The GRF311 has the patented Teledyne Surface Mount Ground Shield added to the all metal, hermetically sealed construction which gives excellent EMI shielding and a high ESD resistance without the need for an extra ground pin.
The relay has bandwidth characterised from DC to 8.0GHz, with exceptional contact switching repeatability, low insertion loss and good contact-to- contact isolation.
In addition to excellent RF performance, the Time Domain characteristics show a Propagation Delay Time of 56pS through the normally open contact when the relay is energised, and 61pS through the normally closed contact when de-energised, measured with an input pulse to the contacts of 1.0V having a rise time of 37pS.
The GRF311 is also available as the GRF331 which has a more sensitive coil requiring just 185mW at rated voltage. Both the GRF311 and the GRF331 have a choice of coil voltage with 5, 12 and 26VDC coils available as standard.
At just 0.89mm taller than the through hole RF311, the GRF311 with the patented surface mount feature and tape and reel packages available as an option, makes the relay ideal for volume production applications.
Both the GRF311 and GRF331 are fully RoHS compliant, able to withstand process temperatures to +260ºC, and are environmentally tough with an operating temperature range of -55°C to +85ºC, vibration of 10G to 500Hz, and shock of 30G, 6mS, half sine.
The RF311/GRF311 relays are broadband products capable of maintaining signal integrity for applications with up to 12.5GBps data rate.

Teledyne’s Power group features its New Solid State Power Controller PC605.
Modern Power Distribution Systems for aircraft . and land vehicles must .
have very high reliability . and lifetime. The system . design is oriented
towards .being environmentally rugged and reducing space and weight by
comparison with traditional power distribution. Conventional power distribution
architecture has cabling from the power source to a load switch (relay or
contactor and a protection device circuit breakers and
|
|
fuses), with cabling to the load. Additionally there is a control circuit providing commands to the load switch.
By combining load switch and protection in one unit, the traditional protection device and associated inter-connect can be removed saving space and weight and reducing failure risk.
Solid State Power Controllers (SSPC) are designed for this functionality and serve as power switch and super fast circuit breaker in one package.
Teledyne has a 30 year SSPC pedigree in space, aviation and military applications with generations of hermetic devices.
Our development programme has added plastic packaged SSPC’s to meet applications where hermeticity is not required, but reliability and environmental ruggedness need to remain the same.
The new COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) Series PC605 SSPC’s allows economic use of these devices in aircraft, military land vehicles, naval, traffic controls and medical applications.
The PC605 is available for 28VDC applications in 10, 15 & 25A load ratings. The automated short circuit and overload protection follows an I2T pattern (trip curve) as defined in MIL-STD-1760, and will tolerate a 600% current surge for 50mS.

With reference to the trip curve shown, if overload outside the trip curve is detected the PC605 SSPC will trip the load off within 60µS. The PC605 Series can be operated in a temperature range between -55°C and +105ºC. Download your datasheet from www.teledynemicro.com/power/off-the-shelf-controllers.asp.
